Enrolment Booklet
The 2024 Enrolment Booklet contains all the infomation you need to successfully enrol in your courses at Secondary College of Languages. It contains infomation such as the enrolment process and available student support.
Enrolment Application Form
A completed enrolment application form is required for new enrolments at SCL. The form must be signed by the student and parent/carer, as well as the SCL Coordinator and Principal of the weekday school.
When the application has been approved, the student, SCL Coordinator and parents/carers will receive a confirmation of enrolment email. This email will indicate the date that the student will commence studies.
Students cannot attend classes until they have received a confirmation email.
Appendix 1 - Late Enrolment
A late enrolment is any application for Year 11 students that is submitted after 2 March 2024. All late enrolments must include a completed Appendix 1.
Late enrolment applications may be submitted by students in the following circumstances:
if the student is a recent arrival into the country (within the previous 2 months)
if the student has recently transferred out from an Intensive English Centre (within the previous 2 months)
if there are other compassionate or compelling circumstances.
The approval of late applications will be determined by the SCL Principal on a case-by-case basis.
Appendix 2 - Language Continuers Course
If you are applying to study a [Language] Continuers course, where there are [Language] in Context course available, you must include a completed Appendix 2 and relevant supporting documentation with a new enrolement application.
Appendix 3 - Language in Context Course
If you are applying for a [Language] in Context course, you must include Appendix 3 and relevant supporting documentation with a new enrolment application.
This is not required for Japanese in Context course.
Appendix 4 - Recognition of Prior Learning
Students seeking to advance into a language course without having completed the previous year or stage should submit a completed Appendix 4 and supporting documentation with their enrolment application. Approval will be determined by the SCL Principal on a case-by-case basis.
Appendix 5 - Acceleration
Acceleration is offered to accommodate the learning needs of students who demonstrate high potential and advanced gifts and talents in their language course.
Acceleration is intended for Year 9 students who have achieved, or have the potential to achieve, all Stage 5 outcomes by the end of the Year 9 school year. These students will have also been identified as being high potential and gifted.
All students applying for acceleration at SCL in a language course must read through the Policy and submit the completed Appendix 5.
The final decision regarding acceleration will be made by the SCL Principal.
Completed application form and supporting documents should be forwarded to SCL.Enrolments@det.nsw.edu.au by the weekday school.
Eligibility
Students seeking to enrol at the Secondary College of Languages must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- The student must be enrolled with a public school or other educational provider (including a non-government school or TAFE college) at the time of study.
- The language requested should be the student’s community language or a language in which the student has had prior learning.
- The language course requested must not be available for study at the student’s weekday school.
Continuers courses
Students seeking to enrol in [Language] Continuers courses, where there are [Language] in Context and/or [Language] and Literature courses must also satisfy NESA’s eligibility requirements:
- Students have had no more than one year’s formal education from the first year of primary education (Year 1) in a school where the language is the medium of instruction.
- Students have had no more than three years of residency in the past 10 years in a country where the language is the medium of communication
Context courses
Students seeking to enrol in [Language] in Context courses where there is a [Language] and Literature course must also satisfy NESA's eligibility requirements:
- Students have had no formal education in a school where the language is the medium of instruction beyond the year in which the student turns 10 years of age (typically Year 4 or 5 of primary education).
Speakers of dialects and variants of a language (for example Hokkien, Cantonese, Shanghainese) are considered to be speakers of the standard language (for example Mandarin).
Students who do not meet the eligibility requirements for a [Language] in Context course are encouraged to apply for the [Language] and Literature course.
Discontinuation
Students who wish to withdraw from the Secondary College of Languages will need to complete a Discontinuation Form below:
The form needs to be signed by the student, parent/caregiver and the student's weekday school. Completed form should be emailed to SCLanguage.School@det.nsw.edu.au.
The College will email the SCL Coordinator with an official ‘Notice of Discontinuation’ once the form has been processed. This email will contain the date from which the discontinuation is effective. The school is responsible for withdrawing the student from the unit on Schools Online.
